Getting Started
What should I do right after an accident or injury?
The most important thing is to take care of yourself first. Get medical attention, even if you feel okay in the moment. Some injuries don’t show up immediately.
I am not sure if I have a case. Should I still call?
Yes. Many people don’t realize that what happened to them may be someone else’s legal responsibility. We will listen and give you a straight answer. No cost, no pressure.
How soon after my injury should I contact an attorney?
As soon as possible. Florida, Georgia, and Maryland all have filing deadlines. Miss them, and you typically lose your right to recover anything. Evidence also disappears fast, so call us as soon as you can.
Do I need a police report to file a claim?
Helpful, but not always required. We can often build a strong case from medical records, photos, and witness statements. If you did not file a report, do not assume your case is lost.
Cost and Fees
How much does it cost to hire Garcia Sheppard?
Nothing upfront. We work on contingency. We only get paid if we recover money for you. Our fee comes out of the settlement. You never write us a check out of pocket.
What if I cannot afford a doctor right now?
We can connect you with medical providers who treat injury clients on a lien basis, meaning they wait to be paid from your settlement. Getting treatment documented early matters for both your health and your case.
The Legal Process
How long does a personal injury case take?
It depends on the case’s complexity and how the other side behaves. Some cases resolve in months. Others take longer if litigation is required. We will give you a realistic timeline and keep you updated throughout.
Will my case go to trial?
Most cases settle before trial. That said, we prepare every case as if it is going to trial, and that preparation is what drives strong settlements. If trial is what it takes, we are ready.
The insurance company offered me a settlement. Should I take it?
Do not sign anything before speaking with an attorney. Early offers are almost always low. Once you accept and sign a release, you cannot go back for more.
Do I have a case if I was partially at fault?
Possibly. Florida, Georgia, and Maryland each handle comparative fault differently. In some situations, you can still recover even if you share some responsibility. Call us, and we’ll tell you where you stand.
Working with Garcia Sheppard
Can you take my case if I live outside of Florida?
Yes. We are licensed in Florida, Georgia, and Maryland. If your case falls outside those states, we will let you know and help point you in the right direction.
How will you keep me informed about my case?
We communicate openly and regularly. You will always know where things stand and what is coming next. If you have a question, you can reach us directly.
Specific case types
I was hurt at a business or on someone else's property. Do I have a case?
Possibly. Property owners are legally responsible for maintaining safe conditions. If a hazard caused your injury and the owner knew or should have known about it, they may be liable.
Can I sue if a loved one was killed in an accident?
Yes. Wrongful death claims allow surviving family members to seek compensation when someone is killed due to another’s negligence. Deadlines apply, so contact us as soon as possible.
